Well, it's been a couple of days, people are still trying to wrap their heads and hearts around the fact that Steve Jobs passed away. Business-innovation-marketing outspoken, otherwise super-private, Jobs was a rare character with his iron hand, unbelieveable vision to drive various markets forward and realize his dreams. He probably felt like a kid in a candy store for most of his adult life. And we're all sad he's gone...

Samsung LogoAccording to news reports, it's Christmas time again - Apple and Samsung are about to clash on various markets, on various patents, on various claims, on various percentages... it's about to become very, very interesting again, we should say. There were all sorts of news in the past weeks about it - first Apple sued Samsung and got an injunction in Germany for Samsung's Galaxy Tab which led to Samsung pulling its device from a trade show. Then Samsung responded by getting ready to duke it out on iPhone 5 in a "strategical" way. Translation - just right on time to try and screw up Apple's iPhone 5 launch. Now, there are various claims that Samsung is asking for a 2.4% fee on iPhone's chipsets. Let's see where does that leave us....

Motorola FireAfter all of the latest hoopla, it's really hard to imagine what HP's next move should or would be. PC business spinoff has left more then a few heads scratching. WebOS handlind was a complete and utter disaster. Going all-in into high-margin enterprise business as a complete service provider is a process that wouldn't bring big bucks overnight. And investors do have a right to now what's the plan gonna be...

Is Nokia really that small?

NokiaSo, Nokia decided to go with WP7. Smart move or a dumb one - we'll see about that, and hopefully - rather soon. At the same time, we have companies like HTC (Desire, Desire HD, Incredible, ...) and Sony Ericsson (for example, Xperia X8, X10, X10 mini etc) doing Android-based phones, and WP7-based ones (HTC HD7, Mozart, Trophy, Surround, Sony Ericsson Xperia X7, X7 mini, announced and unannounced models). The question is - is Nokia "that small" that it couldn't withstand doing both like our examples here, HTC and Sony Ericsson?

Can Microsoft pull a "Windows" on Apple - yet again?

AndroidAfter switching phones last week - went from good old Nokia E90 Communicator that served me to absolute perfection for some five or so years - to HTC Desire HD. I also used Blackberry - both devices and the service itself (on BB devices and E90 as it's one of the last Symbian-based phones with BB client) - for six or seven years, as well. I gave it all up so I can have one decent phone that can do everything that I need - browse with Flash, have good UI, music capabilities, radio, apps and, on top of that - have a good camera. Desire HD checks all of those checkmarks and then some. So, having had a chance to play around with Android-based phones and, especially - HTC Desire - I think that it's an universally good move. Then I met a couple of local HTC representatives and got the HTC HD7 for a review (to follow up shortly) and - the plot thickens…

The name of the game is - mobile platform - part II

PDF Print E-mail
Written by Vedran Dakic

NokiaI've been thinking about this for a week or so and... I can't help but think that Nokia's Windows Phone move is a bad one for the company. So.... here it goes. Right now, key word isn't "tablet". Or "smartphone". Or UI, or copy-paste, or lack thereof. It's something else. It's "platform". The whole nine yards, the whole package. And the "we've got a service pack that's gonna add copy-paste" principle isn't gonna work here, as Microsoft found out last week...

NokiaA couple of years ago, it was all about desktop computers. Then, the tsunami of mobile computers came along and washed away something that seemed indestructible. "People will always need PC". Desktops lasted for what, 10, 15, 20 years. Notebook computers-mania lasted much shorter - for 5-7 years. And right now, everything is turning on its head yet again. But for the first time, it's not the computers turning IT around - it's mobile devices.
