Toshiba X505-887 review

X505 Intro picture18.4" screen, Core i7 740QM, four GB's of memory, GeForce 360m and Blu-Ray drive are definite stars of this desktop replacement. As your mobile office, you can take it anywhere and be completely sure that you'll be able to do whatever kind of work you want to do, and pretty fast. Gaming, mobile connectivity and surprisingly good battery might help. It's big for sure, but is it also worth it to carry around so you can do the work?

@WORK
DTR class of laptops is usually considered to be leaders of the pack in terms of performance, and this one doesn't disappoint. If you put a decent SSD inside – or a couple of them (there's place for two hard drives, but the second drive bay is missing the mounting mechanism that you can buy online), we're talking about a beast for video-editing, music production, gaming or just any kind of number crunching on the road. It has a very good keyboard and multi-touch touchpad, too.

@CONNECTIVITY
Bluetooth and wireless (802.11 a/b/g/n) are present and encountered for, as well as the Gigabit Ethernet port. There are no parallel or serial ports (as it should be), but it does have four USB ports, one of them being the combo USB/e-SATA port, ExpressCard slot, FireWire, audio ports and memory card reader. Of course, HDMI connector is there so you can hook it up to any new LCD/plasma screen.

@BATTERY
This is one of things that we particularly like about it – battery is really good. Being a 12-cell is somehow semi-unique – most of the other laptop vendors deliver their models with either 6-cell or 9-cell battery. You'll be able to watch more then a full movie with it (2h43min battery life), or just do plain everyday work of browsing and stuff like that for some 3h51min according to our measurements. Pretty awesome for this class.

@CONCLUSION
It gets kind of hot, that's for sure. We would recommend to get a decent cooling pad for it (Thermaltake's Massive 23 seems like a good choice even if X500-887 will be a bit too big for it), unless you want to feel the heat. We wouldn't assume that you'll take this beast and work with it in your lap, but cooling pad would be a good accessory nevertheless. We do mind the fact that Toshiba's pretty buttons on the left side get in the way at times, but that's a minor complaint over the overall impression. Which is – this is a great piece of machinery to have if you 're looking for a one-does-it-all laptop solution.
